AeroPAC's MudRoc 2004 launch meet, June 18-20, 2004

AeroPAC's early-summer launch meet each year at Nevada's Black Rock Desert is called MudRoc (or MudRock, depending whether you want to emphasize the rockets or Black Rock). "Mud" is part of the name since the lakebed isn't always completely dry yet that early in the season.

I could only make it on June 19 because I had to go back home and then on to Mojave (in Southern California) for SpaceShipOne's first space flight, which was at dawn on June 21.

img_1240.jpg - 2004:06:19 21:10:10Little by little, the pads are filling up as people get ready for the night launch.

img_1241.jpg - 2004:06:19 21:34:38Night launches are spectacular sights. I snapped just a little late on this one. The shutter didn't open until the rocket was already in flight. The smoke trail goes all the way to the ground while the rocket streak only starts where the shutter opened.

img_1243.jpg - 2004:06:19 21:39:33Here's another one where the shutter opened after the rocket was off the ground. So the streak starts well above the pad.

img_1247.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:08:58After the first batch of rockets are launched, the LCO opens the range so more people can bring their rockets out to the pads. This cycle will continue through the night launch until either the FAA-issued airspace waiver closes, or no one has any more rockets ready to fly, whichever comes first.

img_1248.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:16:23A nice straight red streak from Pad 24.

img_1249.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:18:18You can tell this was a bright one because it illuminated the next row of launch pads too.

img_1250.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:19:39Another bright one...

img_1251.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:20:53This one was probably knocked over a bit by a gust of wind as it got off the rail. But it straightened out nicely as it gained speed.

img_1252.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:25:24Erik Ebert's rocket doesn't just have lights - it has a laser. The squigly line on the ground is where the laser wandered during the 13 seconds that the shutter was open.

img_1253.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:25:56And now with the flash on, you can see Erik holding his rocket.

img_1254.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:29:23A nice bright red straight launch. And the camera picked up some stars in the sky too.

img_1267.jpg - 2004:06:19 22:49:04You can see in the dark that some sparks came off of this one.
